Hospital beds to be set up at NRG

Mayor John Whitmire said some Houston hospitals are having issues discharging patients who can't go home because they don't have power.

He said the city is going to open a backup facility in NRG that will have 250 beds, so those patients can be moved out of hospitals to make room for new ones.

Whataburger app shows extent of Houston power outages

With food in the fridge going bad and non-perishables running low, people who are desperate for a hot meal have been driving around looking for fast-food restaurants that are open. If they get lucky and find one, they might have to wait in a long line of cars.

Well, leave it to Texas-based Whataburger to help save you some time!  Download their app and under the locations section, type in your ZIP code or city and see a map of Whataburgers in your area. If the location has an orange Whataburger logo that means they have power, are open and are serving customers through the drive-thru only.

The gray Whataburger logos signal the store is closed. Unfortunately, the map has A LOT of gray Ws right now.

Credit: Whataburger
The gray Whataburger logos mean the store is still closed due to power outages caused by Hurricane Beryl. Orange Ws signal their drive-thru is open.

Harris County Civil Courts closed Wednesday

Harris County Civil Courts at Law will remain closed on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, due to ongoing impacts from Hurricane Beryl.

All cases set for Wednesday will be rescheduled. This includes civil cases on dockets for each of the four Harris County Civil Courts at Law, as well as the docket run by Harris County Civil Courts at Law Associate Judge Jermaine Thomas.

Jury duty for Harris County is also canceled for Wednesday.

9 Houston fire stations not operable due to power

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said nine fire stations lost power during the hurricane and didn't have working backup generators.

He said fire stations shouldn't have been built without adding generators.

"That will not be allowed going forward and that's a commitment. It's just outrageous," a fiery Whitmire said at a news conference. "Great cities do not have to close a fire station because they don't have backup generators."

Trouble filling prescriptions?

As Hurricane Beryl power outages continue, a lot of Houston-area pharmacies are closed.

We reached out to CVS and Walgreens about the situation and CVS sent the following statement.

"Approximately 90 CVS Pharmacy locations are currently closed because they don’t have power. We’re reopening locations as soon as power is restored and it’s safe for colleagues, customers, and patients. In the meantime, patients can visit any open CVS Pharmacy for help with their immediate prescription needs."

We are waiting to hear back from Walgreens.

Very long waits in TSA lines at Bush Airport

Houston Airports warned travelers to expect long lines at both airports because of storm-related staff shortages.

"While our airport is open, just like so many Houstonians, many of our employees are unable to get to work today," Bush IAH posted on X.

They also shared a photo showing dozens of people waiting to go through the TSA lines.

Check-in lines are also long and concessions and other services are limited.

Getting to the airports is still challenging with street closures, debris in roads and streetlights out so travelers should leave plenty of time.

Cooling centers open

As massive power outages drag on, hundreds of thousands of people don't have air conditioning in the middle of a Heat Advisory from the National Weather Service.

In response, the City of Houston, non-profits and others are opening cooling centers to help people get a break from the extreme heat.

NRG Stadium damaged by Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl damaged NRG Stadium leaving gaping holes in the roof. From Air 11, you could see the red and blue stadium seats and field through those holes.

NRG sent us the following statement.

“Like many of our neighbors in the Gulf Coast region, NRG Park sustained damage from Hurricane Beryl, including to the roof of NRG Stadium.

HCSCC officials are collaborating with state, county, and city officials to assist with recovery efforts throughout the region. This collective undertaking requires all of us to work together with a strong commitment to our community. While we assist with these efforts, we are also assessing the extent of damages to NRG Park facilities.

We look forward to seeing our neighbors at NRG Park soon as we return to normal operations.”

Boil water notices issued for Harris County MUD 421 and FWSD 45

Effective immediately, the Harris County MUD 421 water system has issued a precautionary boil water notice to its residents due to a loss of pressure caused by a temporary issue with the generator at the water plant from Hurricane Beryl. Harris County MUD 421 is in Northeast Harris County and serves residents in the Imperial Forest subdivision in the area of Highway 90 and S Lake Houston Parkway. Crews are working to repair the generator and restore water pressure; however, we do not currently have an estimated completion time for water to be restored

CenterPoint hopes to restore power to 1 million customers by Wednesday night

Hurricane Beryl knocked out power to more than 3 million customers, most of them with CenterPoint, in the Greater Houston area.

The power companies and city leaders say this will be a multi-day outage for most customers because the damage is extensive and widespread.

In an update Monday night, CenterPoint said it hopes to restore power to 1 million customers by the end of the day Wednesday but customers in the hardest-hit areas" could experience extended outages and should plan accordingly." At 8 p.m., more than 1.9 million CenterPoint customers were still without power.

Crews are assessing the damage and will start repairs as soon as possible. However, thousands of out-of-town crews weren't staged in Houston in advance of Hurricane Beryl as in past hurricanes.

At least 10 transmission lines are down, according to Acting Gov. Dan Patrick.
