HOUSTON — Just one day after Hurricane Beryl slammed into the Texas coast, researchers at Colorado State released their updated Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast and they're now calling for a more active season than what was in their original forecast.
Keep in mind – regardless of just how busy a hurricane season is, it just takes one to devastate a community. Beryl was evidence of that.
With the update that came out on Tuesday, Colorado State University increased its number of named storms from 23 to 25. Of those 25, they now call for 12 hurricanes, up from 11. And of those 12 hurricanes, their forecast says six will be major. That’s one more than they previously believed would be major hurricanes.
In their report released on Tuesday, they noted that sea surface temperatures in the main region for hurricane development are near record warmth levels. That provides a better environment for formation and intensification. They also still anticipate a La Niña during the peak of the season, which would bring less vertical wind shear to keep storms from strengthening. Colorado State University researchers said Hurricane Beryl was a sign of a very active season ahead.
