State leaders meeting next week to discuss ongoing delays at Houston-area USPS mail facilities

Texas Congressman Pete Sessions told KHOU 11 News he’ll be in Houston next Thursday to get a firsthand look at the mail problems and try to find a way to fix them.

HOUSTON, Texas — Texas Congressman Pete Sessions we'll be in Houston next Thursday to get a firsthand look at the ongoing mail problems occurring at Houston-area USPS processing centers and find a way to fix them.

In December, KHOU 11 News was the first to report on the postal problems in Houston and bring those concerns to members of congress.

The house oversight and accountability committee are also stepping in to try and help fix the problem.

Congressman Sessions said the closed-door meeting will be with postal service managers in Houston, members of the house oversight committee and congressmen from Houston.

His staff will also tour the USPS processing center in Missouri City.

The postal service has blamed those delays we’ve highlighted on machinery issues and challenges implementing a ten-year plan to modernize the postal service.

“It is going to be something where our staff will go and inspect inside the offices and the post office,” said Sessions. “And then we will engage the postal service on these issues and then develop these into what could be a field hearing in some point where we invite the public.”

Congressman Sessions said the postal service is going through a lot of changes including having problems hiring people as well as budget issues.

He hopes after that closed door meeting next week, they can find solutions to put a stop to these delays and he sees this as not just an issue here in Houston but a nationwide one.

Next week’s meeting is not a formal hearing, and the postmaster will not attend or testify.

Still, he said he wants to get to the bottom of the issue and hopes this is one step closer to solving it.
