'Someone knows who did this' | Family still searching for answers 6 months after teen's death

Jarvon Coles was shot and killed at a party in Humble in March. Investigators are still trying to track down the crucial piece of evidence to solve the crime.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — The family of a teen who was killed earlier this year is hoping new attention brought to the case will help find the young man’s killer.

It’s still not clear who shot and killed Jarvon Coles six months ago at a house party in Humble.

Jarvon’s family is putting together a fundraiser to help increase the $5,000 reward for information Crime Stoppers is offering. And while investigators have compiled quite a bit of evidence, they're still hoping someone comes forward to give them the final piece to solve this case.

“Someone knows who did this,” Jarvon’s grandfather, Braxton Coles, said.

At least that’s the desperate hope the Coles family has been holding on to since March 9. That was the night Jarvon -- a star Northshore High School student-athlete -- was shot to death while at a house party in Humble.

“You send your kid off to these parties to have a good time and you expect for them to come back home and unfortunately, Javon didn't come back home that night,” Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Sidney Miller said.

Investigators said from then to now, they’ve followed up on every lead that’s come in but they believe there’s more to know and it’s likely there are quite a few people who could help solve this case.

“Let's be real. A party like that, and the drive-by. There are people out there that know who did this,” Andy Kahan, with Crime Stoppers, said.

Investigators now believe the shooter or shooters parked about a block from the party and under the cover of night opened fire in an attempt to scare partygoers and break up the party. Instead, they broke this family’s heart.

“We are looking forward to the good we can do. They say through every tragedy some good must come, but I never thought the tragedy would be ours, but this is a position we're in,” Coles said.

Jarvon, they say, wasn’t just a star football player, but a standout student with multiple academic and athletic college offers on the table. Since his death, his family has created a foundation: Crash out for Cause. And they’ve sponsored kids in youth sports leagues and are now offering scholarships. One for a student in Channelview and another at Northshore.

“Can't dwell on what happened because nothing we can do nothing anyone can do and bring him back only thing we can do is we can try to do as much as we can," Coles said.

The family says they set up information booths at all Northshore home games to share a message about the need to stop senseless gun violence.
