HOUSTON — A place of tranquility and peace. That's the hope for a newly installed bench in memory of 18-year-old Jarvon Coles. The Northshore student-athlete was killed four months ago at a Humble house party.
Harris County Precinct 2 has a memorial bench program and Jarvon is the fourth one installed, according to Commissioner Adrian Garcia.
While the search is still on for the person responsible for taking Jarvon's life, family members said they are still blown away at his impact even after his death.
The memorial bench reveal is one this family would trade if it meant bringing back their loved one.
“This is another on a long list of accolades and memories of my grandson,” said Braxton Coles.
Instead of him here, a tribute, engraved on a plaque, is just scratching the surface of what he did on and off the field.
“I’m almost speechless to think that an 18-year-old kid would generate this much. I hate to use the word buzz this much buzz it’s kind of beyond me," said Coles.
On March 9, Harris County investigators said someone pulled up in a car near a house in Humble and randomly started shooting toward a party crowd. Coles was the only one hit. The search for the person who did it continues.
“This morning is a bittersweet moment,” said Garcia.
This bench in a way symbolizes coming together in joy and in grief. It's been an overwhelming feeling, welcoming support for people who knew him and those who didn't.
“We are just so truly grateful and touched that Commissioner Garcia would take time,” Coles said.

Garcia helped make this memorial bench a reality.
“We have worked very hard to help. Give people the opportunity to find some degree of peace and tranquility in these difficult moments,” Garcia said.
The hope, he said, is to provide comfort and education about who Jarvon was. Also perhaps encouraging someone to come forward with answers.
“If you are the person responsible for this, I know it’s tearing you up. Turn yourself in. and sleep at night," Coles said.
The family has launched an organization called "Crash Out for Cause" to support other grieving families and young athletes.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office said they’ve tracked down several leads and tips but encourages anyone with information to contact the HCSO homicide division at 713-274-9100.
