'Monster': Mother of shooting victim reacts after accused killer is charged with kidnapping missing Baytown woman

Megan Rouse was found dead 12 days after Kalie Goodwin disappeared. Both cases are tied to suspect Quan Flowers, according to police in Baytown and Houston.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — It's been two months since 24-year-old Megan Rouse was laid to rest, but it's still painful for her mother to talk about her daughter's violent death.

The fourth of five daughters was found dead on May 3 along a secluded dirt road in the Almeda area near Highway 288. Police said she'd been badly beaten and shot multiple times.

"You know, did she call out for me, did she call out for her dad?" Donna Shaw wondered.  "I think about her, you know, just lying there.”

Shaw considered Rouse a butterfly who kind of fluttered through life.  But she has no idea how her daughter encountered Quan Flowers, the man accused of killing her.

Flowers, 39, was back in the news this week when Baytown police announced that he's been charged with kidnapping 29-year-old Kalie Goodwin. The Baytown woman was last seen leaving her apartment on Decker Drive the night of April 21, 12 days before Rouse was killed. Police say Goodwin was in a car with Flowers.

Her mother later got a call demanding money for Goodwin's return. She could hear her daughter crying out in agony in the background.

Baytown police said they found evidence that Goodwin was assaulted by Flowers at a home in Houston. But no one knows what happened to her after that and she's still missing.

"He’s a [expletive] monster," Shaw told us Friday. "I didn’t mean to say that, but it boils down to it, that’s all he is.”

She wore a t-shirt with Rouse's photo that said "Her fight is our fight. Justice for Megan."

She said finding justice now extends beyond her daughter's case to Goodwin and possibly others.

"I mean, I hope they up the charges to capital murder," Shaw said. "I want him to have the death penalty."

We did some digging and found that Flowers has a lengthy criminal history and was reportedly charged with murder 20 years ago in South Carolina. But that case was never prosecuted.

He remains locked up in the Harris County Jail with another court date set for next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Baytown Police Chief John Stringer urges anyone with information on Goodwin's disappearance, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward. Tips can be reported to Baytown Crime Stoppers at 281-427-TIPS (8477) or to the Crime Stoppers website.

“As a father of three daughters myself, my heart goes out to Kalie’s mother,” Stringer said. “I can only imagine the heartwrenching pain that she feels at this time.”
