BAYTOWN, Texas — A man who was already charged with murder in the death of one young woman has now been charged with kidnapping a 29-year-old Baytown woman who's been missing for months, police said Wednesday.
Kalie Goodwin vanished from Baytown on April 21.
On June 3, Baytown police named Quan Sergio Flowers, 39, as a person of interest in her disappearance. Flowers, also known as "Country," was already jailed in Houston and charged with murder in the shooting death of 24-year-old Megan Rouse.
During a news conference on Wednesday, Baytown police shared the evidence that led to charges against Flowers and pleaded with the public to help find Goodwin.
Missing: What we know about Kalie Goodwin
On April 22, Goodwin's mother, Kaci Richardson, got a call from two men who demanded she send them $600 via CashApp. Richardson said she could hear her daughter crying for help and saying she was getting beat up. "Momma, my face is deformed," Richardson heard her daughter say.
Baytown police learned that a friend had last seen Goodwin around 7 p.m. the night before at her apartment complex in the 3100 block of Decker Drive near San Jacinto Avenue.
“We believe that Kalie got into a vehicle with an unknown male and left the apartment complex at that time,” Assistant Chief Steve Dorris said.
Investigators used surveillance video and license plate readers to track down the owner of that car. She told them that her boyfriend, Quan Flowers, had been driving it.
The vehicle was later spotted by Houston police who pulled over Flowers on a traffic stop. They arrested him on an unrelated charge.
Through cellphone data uncovered by a digital forensics team, detectives tracked both Goodwin's phone and the phone linked to the CashApp to a home in Houston. The owner was wanted on unrelated charges and arrested by the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.
During a search, detectives said they discovered evidence linked to Goodwin that showed she was assaulted by Flowers inside the home.
On June 20, Flowers was charged with aggravated kidnapping in connection with Goodwin's disappearance, but police still don't know where the missing woman is.
'Help us bring her home'
Goodwin's mother was at the news conference Wednesday to plead for help finding her daughter.
“She’s a sister, she’s a daughter, she’s a granddaughter, she’s a friend and she is a piece that’s missing from our family," Richardson said. “I beg anybody that knows something, please say something. Keep your eyes and ears open and help us bring Kalie Brooke home. Help us bring her home.”
Baytown Police Chief John Stringer also urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward. Tips can be reported to Baytown Crime Stoppers at 281-427-TIPS (8477) or to the Crime Stoppers website.
“Your tip could be the key to finding her,” Stringer said.
He said the department is committed to finding Goodwin and they've mobilized all available resources.
“As a father of three daughters myself, my heart goes out to Kalie’s mother,” Stringer said. “I can only imagine the heartwrenching pain that she feels at this time.”
What we know about Megan Rouse
On May 3, 12 days after Goodwin disappeared, a Houston police officer found the body of Megan Rouse lying in the middle of Anagnost Road, a dirt road in the Almeda area near where Highway 288 meets the South Belt. She had been severely beaten and shot multiple times. Rouse's wallet was found nearby.
Investigators learned that Rouse had called a friend that night about an hour before her body was found. The friend said it sounded like Rouse was with an unknown man during that call.
Surveillance videos from nearby businesses showed only one car on the remote road during the time between the phone call and when Rouse's body was found.
Several shell casings found at the scene were linked to two aggravated assaults with deadly weapon incidents in Houston on March 29 and April 4. Investigators said those crimes happened in the same area where Rouse's body was found and had similar violent patterns. They said that a car seen on surveillance during the March 29 incident matched the one seen driving on Anagnost Road the night Rouse's body was found.
Flowers was arrested on Friday, May 31, and charged with murder in the Rouse case. He remains jailed on a $450,000 bond.
We spoke with the victim's family after Flowers' court appearance in June.
“I hope they give him the death penalty," Rouse's mother told us.
They said they're praying for Goodwin's family.
