MATAGORDA, Texas — Hurricane Beryl battered Southeast Texas after making landfall Monday morning along the Gulf Coast around 3:55 a.m.
The National Hurricane Center reported Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane. At landfall, it had max sustained winds of 80 mph.
It remained hurricane strength through much of the morning with NHC reporting it still had 75 mph max sustained winds at 8 a.m. as it moved northward southwest of Houston at 12 mph.
As the storm moved through Southeast Texas, it knocked out power for more than a million customers, according to CenterPoint Energy.
