Hurricane Beryl leaves its mark on Sugar Land Town Square

Just after 7 a.m., the storm appeared to damage the roof of City Hall at the Sugar Land Town Square on City Walk.

SUGAR LAND, Texas โ€” Hurricane Beryl left its mark on Sugar Land Monday morning as it moved through Fort Bend County.

The Category 1 storm brought 80 mph maximum sustained winds to the area as it made landfall. Just after 7 a.m., the storm appeared to damage the roof of City Hall at the Sugar Land Town Square on City Walk near Highway 6 and the Southwest Freeway.

Reporter Maria Aguilera was there covering the storm and watched it happen.

According to Carlos Hernandez, public information officer for Sugar Land, city officials are aware of the damage to the roof of City Hall. He said they are hoping to safety inspect it once the weather permits.

No injuries were reported due to the damage.

The eye of the storm made landfall near Matagorda just before 4 a.m. and continued on a path north through Fort Bend County spawning multiple Tornado Warnings for the area.

The hurricane has left more than one million CenterPoint customers without power across the Houston area.
