What to do with your plants after a freeze

Here is some expert advice on how to help your garden recover after a freeze.

HOUSTON — Temperatures will finally get warm enough Wednesday in the Houston area to uncover your plants, but there are a few things you should keep in mind to help your garden recover.

Some of those plants may have died during the freeze, so you'll want to know which ones you should remove. Experts told KHOU 11's Stephanie Whitfield to pull out any plants that look slimy or mushy to prevent fungal disease. Otherwise, you should leave other dead plants and branches alone. That's because some plants that look dead may actually still be OK.

Experts also say pruning sends a signal to the plants to promote new growth, and we're not at that time yet. They say to just be patient and wait until spring.

As for watering your plants, the experts say to water the roots, not the leaves.
