PTO says storm-ravaged Sinclair Elementary will be ready for students next Monday

HISD's original plan was to have students temporarily attend other schools while repairs were completed.

HOUSTON — Repairs are still being made at Sinclair Elementary in the Timbergrove area but the PTO said the campus should be ready enough by the first day of school on Aug. 12.

"All of our students are going to start on campus,” PTO President Kim Ludlow said.

She shared the news this weekend of what she considers to be a huge accomplishment.

"It’s been a lot of things happening since May," Ludlow said. "Obviously, the derecho took out a whole bunch of buildings. The hurricane came and took out some more buildings. So, we’ve had a lot of concerns.”

You might recall that Sinclair became the poster child for hardest-hit campuses after the May storm when HISD Superintendent Mike Miles showed off some of the damage.

"This is just unusable facilities for our kids,” Miles said at the time.

The original plan was to begin the school year elsewhere.

“I’m still frustrated that, you know, our timeline we’re looking at to have the entire campus ready in December," Ludlow said. "That feels like a very long time.”

She credits campus-based leadership and lots of prodding by parents for getting things done.

“I am thrilled that my kids are going to be here. I’m glad that our community gets to stay together, that our teachers get to be on campus," Ludlow said. "I’m really appreciative to our administration and principal who’ve been working incredibly hard to make sure everything is going to happen on Monday for our students.”

We're told some will have to share spaces until the entire campus is back to normal.

HISD did not immediately respond to a request regarding work at Sinclair and other storm-damaged campuses.

“We are hopeful that all campuses will be ready to welcome students on Aug. 12, but we will only open a school building that is fully ready to serve kids safely,” HISD said in a statement in July.
