HISD says goal is to get students back to school on Monday, but power outages could delay that

Miles said four of the 274 schools in the district sustained significant damage and around 90 were without power.

HOUSTON — Schools all across Houston ISD were either damaged or without power. Classes were canceled on Friday and on Saturday, Superintendent Mike Miles gave an update on the condition of schools and when students will return.

Miles held the news conference at Sinclair Elementary in the Heights, one of four campuses in the district he said sustained significant damage in Thursday's storms. He also gave a tour of the campus to the media.

Miles said Pugh, Robinson and Paige elementary schools are the other schools with significant damage.

"There's tree branches. There's glass broken or windows broken, you know, in a lot of places," Miles said. "But as far as as far as extensive damage, this is it. So we feel fortunate about that."

Miles said that the district will make a decision on Sunday about school on Monday, much of it coming down to the power situation. He said there are still around 90 schools without it. The district sent an update out at 6 p.m., saying 77 schools were without power.

"That's a challenge because we can't send kids to a school without power," he said.

He said his goal is to get schools ready by Monday if the power comes back on. He also said the widespread power outages in residential areas may make it hard for students and their families. The district may consider moving students from one school to another, but most likely, he said if a school doesn't have power, it will remain closed.

As for power, CenterPoint Energy told us that their goal is to have power mostly restored for the Houston area by Wednesday.
