HOUSTON — A high school student is recovering after being stabbed in a campus hallway on Wednesday. It happened at Sterling High School in the Houston ISD.
KHOU 11’s Victor Jacobo was the first reporter at the scene as this story was breaking.
According to the district, two students -- both young men – got into a fight at the school a little before 10 a.m. A 17-year-old student reportedly stabbed a 16-year-old. That 17-year-old was detained by HISD police and the victim was rushed to the hospital.
“Two stab wounds to the left side of the body,” said Chief Shamara D. Garner with the Houston Police Department. “Again, we believe to be non-life threatening.”
The school went on lockdown, leaving students rattled.
“I was really scared,” said one student we spoke with. “I started praying. I was hoping that everything will be OK.”
“I's like, unexpected,” said another. “Like, the worst comes to your mind.”
Parents who lined up for hours to pick up their children say violence has been an issue at Sterling and want the district to step up.
“What's being done?” asked parent Bridgette Young. “We want to know, what are y'all doing to keep our babies safe?”
The incident at Sterling happened on the same day as a bomb threat at Bellaire High School, a student who police say had a kitchen knife at Alief Elsik High School and another student who reportedly had a gun at Spring High School.
HISD said they are committed to working with law enforcement and their top priority is the safety and well-being of students and staff.
