According to MCSO, Mayham was out on bond for a Harris County murder charge at the time of the shooting.
Investigators said they used multiple pieces of evidence to identify Mayham as the shooter.
The shooting
Holmes III was found dead in the street near an SUV around 6:40 p.m. that day. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple shell casings were collected at the scene but the shooter was nowhere to be found.
After the shooting, the sheriff's office urged people in the area to stay inside as they searched for the gunman who they said was wearing a ski mask.
Authorities warned people along Oakhurst Drive, which runs from the North Freeway up past Rayford Road near Oak Ridge North, to lock their doors and remain inside.
Several law enforcement agencies took part in the manhunt.
Initial arrest
A few days after the shooting, MCSO announced they made an arrest in the case, but three days after that, they released the person they arrested after his alibi checked out.

Murder charge
During the investigation into the shooting, several witnesses reported seeing a man matching Mayham's description running from the shooting scene after shots were fired. Detectives said they also found surveillance video from near the scene that showed a person holding guns that looked like Mayham.
MCSO investigators said they discovered messages that were sent between Holmes III and Mayham in which they set up a meeting at the exact location where the shooting happened.
Authorities said shell casings found at the scene of the shooting matched shell casings found at the Rayford's Edge apartment complex, where Mayham was staying.
Mayham was wearing a GPS ankle monitor at the time of the shooting due to him being out on bond for the murder charge in Harris County, MCSO said. Investigators were able to pinpoint his location at the time of the shooting which showed him at the scene of the crime. They also tracked him leaving the scene and corroborated the tracking data with video evidence.
