Man wanted in deadly METRORail stabbing arrested after standoff at Heights church, HPD says

The man was taken into custody when he surrendered after an hours-long standoff at a church in the Heights, police said.

HOUSTON — The man wanted in the deadly METRORail stabbing was arrested after barricading himself inside a church Wednesday, according to Houston police.

The suspect was taken into custody sometime before 9:30 p.m. at a church on Heights Boulevard near E 15th Street.

According to Lt. Larry Crowson with the Houston Police Department, the suspect was found in a nearby neighborhood and he ran into the church -- a place where police said he goes often. It's unknown if the suspect is allowed in the church or if he goes there to burglarize it, Crowson said.

The suspect refused to exit the church, and at one point, was even seen sitting on the edge of a window on the third floor threatening to jump.

It took about two hours before the suspect surrendered and was arrested. Police said they are looking into getting him a mental evaluation.

The deadly stabbing happened Sunday when police said the suspect got into a fight with a 55-year-old man. The victim bled to death on the train while the suspect got away.

Surveillance video captured clear images of the suspect. The Houston Police Department released those images to the public with the hopes that someone may recognize him.
