HOUSTON — Hundreds of grateful Houstonians are enjoying a nice Thanksgiving meal at the City Wide Club of America's annual Super Feast at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Super Feast is a Houston tradition that’s been around for decades, providing warm meals and a sense of community every Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“It started years ago, I guess 46 years ago from someone’s kitchen and it has grown and grown and grown and now we are here at the George R. Brown for the last 25 plus years,” regional director Stephanie Lewis told us.
Lines formed for early Thursday morning.
“This morning since 4 o'clock,” Bobby Ortiz said.
Folks also look forward to donations of other items and free services provided.
“The food and the clothes. I need them so bad,” Tawana Moss said. “Jackets and coats and shoes and there will be information about employment opportunities, educational opportunities, there will be free haircuts."
She said it's also about the sense of community.
“My mom passed, so this is my family,” Moss said.
Thousands of volunteers work to make sure those in line have everything they need. For many, it's a Thanksgiving tradition.
“I had lost my mother, and I really didn't have anyone to spend Thanksgiving with and I saw it actually on the news, and I decided to volunteer and started making friends volunteering and started enjoying it every year,” Lovie Gray, one of the volunteer captains, explained.
He's thankful for the opportunity to give back.
“It really means a lot because it's you, Houstonians helping Houstonians and I really like that,” Lovie said.
Those waiting in line feel the same way.
“It opens hearts for people to the community and it shows people that everybody can get together and love one another,” Ortiz.
Super Feast offers two options: Grab 'n Go from your vehicle or Sit'n Sup and dine inside.
Grab 'n Go: Drive to Chartres and Walker and look for the green flag. Remain in your car. Pick up bicycles, toys, turkey and baskets with other food items.
Dine in: Follow red flags to the exhibit hall for hot turkey dinners, clothing and toy distribution.
Parking is available for free in the Tundra Parking Garage at 1506 Jackson Street.
