18-year-old arrested, charged with capital murder after double shooting in Spring area, sheriff says

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said 16-year-old Edgar Campos-Bonilla and 18-year-old David Caballero were killed.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — An 18-year-old has been charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of two other teens found inside a car in the Spring area last week, according to court records.

Jose Plata, 18, is charged in connection with the deaths of Edgar Campus-Bonilla, 16, and David Caballero, 18.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the two victims were found shot to death inside a car on Paloma Drive just south of the Grand Parkway just before 10:20 p.m. on Jan. 31

The sheriff said deputies initially got a call about a one-car crash around that time. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered the driver and front seat passenger dead with gunshot wounds. They were later identified as Campos-Bonilla and Caballero.

The sheriff said the car veered off the road. He believed the two were shot when it stopped.

“Pretty young and pretty sad situation seeing young people lose their lives to violence, whatever it is," the sheriff said.

Gonzalez said Plata was arrested on Tuesday and charged with capital murder. He will make his first court appearance on Wednesday.

The sheriff said he doesn’t suspect road rage in this case and they are trying to track down surveillance video to see who else might have been involved.
