Galveston residents prepare for Beryl

Residents in Galveston are preparing to ride out the storm.

GALVESTON, Texas — Beryl is expected to make landfall in less than 24 hours along that Texas coast. Several Texas counties have issued voluntary evacuation notices. That includes part of Brazoria County and also Matagorda County.

Galveston County has also issued a voluntary evacuation notice for people who live in areas not protected by the seawall. KHOU 11 News spoke to one couple who plans to ride out whatever comes.

Rough tides slamming into Galveston beaches shores is one indication of what's to come. Tropical Storm Beryl is heading toward the Texas coast and is expected to drop massive amounts of rain.

"We always have everything that we need in the house. We have plenty of canned foods and frozen foods," Galveston resident Donna Hall said.

Donna and Ronnie Hall traded the West Coast for the Gulf Coast. And Beryl isn't enough to send them running.

"We’ve had two pretty mild seasons. We were here three years ago when we had the five storms come through, and that was interesting," Ronnie said.

Ahead of an expected landfall Monday that will bring high tide, lifeguard stands are being removed. The City of Galveston issued a voluntary evacuation notice for people living in the West End not protected by a sea wall.

"The West End, I think the elevation is like 3 1/2 feet. So, they get inundated pretty easily," Galveston County Judge Mark Henry said.

"We’re going to have rip currents that are pretty significant. We’re going to have flooding coastal flooding," Henry said.

Henry added that a team of experts is keeping watch and bracing for Beryl.

A red flag warning is also in effect.
