Red Cross makes urgent plea for volunteers to deploy for two weeks into hurricane-ravaged areas

According to the Red Cross, you don't have to have disaster experience. If you have management or supervisory experience, you're encouraged to apply.

HOUSTON — The Red Cross is making an urgent plea for volunteers to work in disaster shelters.

The organization needs people to travel to areas hit by Hurricane Helene, while also preparing to assist with Hurricane Milton recovery.

This will be a two-week volunteer deployment. Even if you don't have disaster experience, but have management, organizational or supervisory skills, you're still asked to apply.

“When disasters upend lives, Red Cross volunteers are on the frontlines providing refuge and comfort to people in their darkest hours,” said Shawn Schulze, Regional CEO for the Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross, in a release sent out Monday. “They truly are the heart and soul of the Red Cross — comprising 90% of our workforce — to help ensure families never face a crisis alone.”

If you’re interested and can commit to a two-week deployment, you’re asked to sign up at RedCross.com/Volunteer.

Hurricane Helene came ashore in the Florida Big Bend region as a Cat. 4 storm. As of Monday, Hurricane Milton was a Cat. 5 storm with max sustained winds at 180 miles per hour. Milton was also heading to Florida somewhere in the Tampa Bay area.
