'We've been forgotten' | 34 families in Sugar Creek community still in the dark after Hurricane Beryl

Amy Hellman and her husband are going on day eight without power. She's living with MS and the heat is starting to take a toll.

SUGAR LAND, Texas — More than a week after Hurricane Beryl made landfall, too many families remain without power. In the Sugar Creek subdivision, linemen have moved out, but dozens of families are still sweating it out in their homes wondering when the lights will be back on.

It's day eight without power for Amy and her husband Dennis. They can't get a straight answer from CenterPoint.

"They're saying we all have power in this subdivision, and we don't," said Amy Hellman.

The generator is still running outside their home.

"Every four hours I have to fill a generator," said Dennis.

It helps cool their bedroom, but that's about it. For Amy, who's living with MS, the longer this goes, the more dangerous it becomes.

"I'm getting to where I can't move in a lot of places because the heat is getting worse," said Amy. "When I get overheated for any amount of time, I start having trouble with my eyes and can't see."

They're one of 34 homes in Sugar Creek, inexplicably still in the dark, including Gary Schultz and his wife just two doors down.

"It's frustrating when your neighbors all have power," said Schultz.

The homes across the street from Gary are all back to normal. He's still filling up his generator. He thought his nightmare would be over last week.

"For other hurricanes, it was just 3 days and those were cat 3's," said Schultz. "This was a cat 1 and I don't think Centerpoint was prepared for it."

And now Centerpoint crews have already left the neighborhood. Families are wondering when they'll be back.

"A day, a week, a month, what is it?" asked Dennis. "No one has an answer."

34 families are desperately wanting to be heard.

"We've been forgotten," said Schultz. "They're not worried about us. They're just putting it off and moved on. My message to Centerpoint is we need help."

KHOU 11 News reached out to Centerpoint for specifics on when the remaining homes in Sugar Creek will be restored, so far we have not heard back. KHOU 11 will continue pushing Centerpoint for specifics and update this story as soon as we get an answer.
