CenterPoint expects to restore power to all customers who can receive power by Friday

CenterPoint said it expects to reach 98% restoration by the end of Wednesday.

CenterPoint put out another update on power restoration on Monday evening.

In the news release, CenterPoint also said it expected to restore power to "all customers who can receive power by Friday."

CenterPoint said it had brought the lights back on more than 2 million customers since Hurricane Beryl struck Southeast Texas. They also said they expect to reach 98% restoration by the end of Wednesday.

"We are grateful to our crews who have restored power to our customers at a stronger pace than we have been able to in any hurricane in our history, despite the difficult conditions," Senior Vice President, Electric Business Lynnae Wilson said. "We continue to work around the clock to get our remaining customers back online."

At the height of the storm, more than 2.5 million power customers were in the dark. Most of those – nearly 2.3 million – were CenterPoint customers. As of 12:45 p.m. Monday, CenterPoint was reporting that just over 237,000 customers were still without power.

Earlier Monday, the power company said there are things customers should look for, like the weatherhead, which is where electricity enters the home. If that’s damaged, power can’t be safely restored to the home until it’s fixed by a licensed electrician.

CenterPoint’s updates on Monday came a day after Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick demanded answers from the company. Abbott gave CenterPoint a July 31 deadline to provide his office with an action plan on what they’ll do now to make power more reliable.

Abbott said first, they need to explain what they will do to remove vegetation, and he said to do it by August 31. He cited a report done by KHOU 11’s Jeremy Rogalski that showed CenterPoint spent less than other companies in vegetation removal.

Abbott also said that CenterPoint needs to tell his office what they’ll do in the coming months to ensure we won’t have the outages we saw in Beryl.

And third – Abbott said CenterPoint must outline what they’ll do to make sure there will be an adequate number of line workers ready to immediately respond to widespread outages. That’s something else Rogalski reported on last week.

Patrick said the top priority right now is to get the power back on. But after that, he wants CenterPoint to answer questions about their response. And he warned those calling the shots for CenterPoint that "a freight train's coming."

“I asked 10 questions, posed 10 questions that we will ask during Senate hearings, and we will have Senate hearings,” Patrick promised.

He said those hearings would be in August.
