Why is the Houston sky hazy?

Southerly breezes at the surface have kept Houston's air quality in the good to moderate range for now.

HOUSTON — Hey Houston! If you've noticed the sky looking a little smoky Wednesday, you're not hallucinating.

We're getting a taste of what New York and the other northern states experienced last week. Yea, that wildfire smoke that blew into their area from Canada.

But our smoke is not coming from the Great White North. We're getting our haze from down yonder.

Wildfires burning in Mexico are giving Houston a hazy look. And while it's nothing like what happened in the North last week, it can be a nuisance.

The smoke is riding the mid and upper-level winds, traveling around the center of the heat dome and into Texas, according to Chief Meteorologist David Paul.

You might have noticed the 'haze' in the sky today. Well, it's actually smoke from wildfires burning in southern Mexico. How is it getting here?? it's riding the mid and upper-level winds, traveling around the center of the heat dome, and into Texas right now. Expect 'hazy' skies again on Thursday. If you didn't catch the haze Wednesday, don't worry. It'll be here again Thursday.

But the good news -- southerly breezes at the surface have kept Houston's air quality in the good to moderate range for now.
