Heat advisory in effect for Houston area until 7 p.m.

Heat index values could reach 105 today. Here's what you need to know.

HOUSTON — The National  Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for most of southeast Texas through 7 p.m. Saturday.

Heat indices are forecast to approach 105 degrees in the afternoon.

Excessive heat can be dangerous. The National Weather Service says it’s the number one weather-related killer, ahead of flooding.

If you work or spend time outside, you should avoid strenuous activities in the hottest hours of the day. 

Also, know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. 

Wear light-fitting clothing when you can and if you spend a lot of time outdoors, take plenty of breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

And if you do suspect you or someone around you is experiencing heatstroke, call 911.

Who is vulnerable to heat-related illness?

According to the National Weather Service, young children and infants, older adults – especially those with pre-existing conditions,  people with chronic medical condition and pregnant women.

What are the symptoms of heatstroke?                              

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the following are signs of heatstroke.

  • Confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech
  • Loss of consciousness (coma)
  • Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
  • Seizures
  • Very high body temperature
  • Fatal if treatment delayed

What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

The CDC also lists out symptoms of heat exhaustion. They are the following.

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Irritability
  • Thirst
  • Heavy sweating
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Decreased urine output
