HOUSTON — The Central American Gyre is a broad, weak area of low pressure that can form during the late spring months and early fall months, which is where we are now.

This feature sometimes spins off more focused areas of low pressure that can form into tropical systems.

If something is going to form in the western Gulf, it will be slow to do so, with the National Hurricane Center giving the latest spot a 20% chance of development.
