Labor Day expected to cap off busy holiday travel weekend for Houston airports

More than 880,000 people were expected to travel through Bush and Hobby Airports this weekend. Monday could be one of the busiest days.

HOUSTON — Monday is expected to wrap up a busy travel weekend at Houston’s airports. From Friday to Monday, 880,000 people are expected to travel.

The airport has been asking people to budget extra time and book parking in advance to make their travels easier. Aside from the occasional traffic jam near the international arrivals curb, the traffic at Bush Airport on Sunday was steady throughout the day.

Around 6:30 Sunday evening, you could see the usual traffic backups on South Terminal Road.

Other travelers were able to easily leave the terminal c parking garage around that time. It's possible that Monday morning between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., there could be more than 70 flights arriving.

The Houston Airport System is forecasting nearly 500 arriving flights Monday compared to only 450 all day Sunday at Bush Airport. The peak number of passengers at Bush was Friday with 148,000 passengers counted. That’s less than the busiest day at Bush on Memorial Day Weekend when 158,000 passengers were counted on Friday, May 24.

Now that summer is over, the airport is anticipating a drop in passengers. The goal is to complete construction of its new eight-lane international curb by Christmas, which will make traffic flow easier in the future on South Terminal Road.

KHOU 11 checked and as of Saturday afternoon, parking garages were not at capacity, although many lots were above 90% full.

You may just need a little extra patience and time getting home if you’re flying to Bush or Hobby on Labor Day.
