HOUSTON — Houston drivers passing through the Greenway Plaza area can expect major traffic delays this weekend as construction crews connect two of the city's busiest highways.

The Southwest Freeway will be shut down in both directions between the I-610 West Loop and Wesleyan, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

The closure is scheduled to begin 9 p.m. Friday and will end at 5 a.m. Monday.

TxDOT officials said construction crews will be placing bridge beams for the new I-610 southbound connector to I-69 northbound. These beams will stretch across all mainlanes of the Southwest Freeway.

The $259 million project will enhance safety and improve mobility by widening the connector ramps to two lanes, increasing sight distances and discouraging traffic weaving, TxDOT officials said.

Drivers should expect delays, and it's encouraged they consider an alternate route. Of course, police officers and others will be onsite to assist with traffic control.
