Southwest Freeway at 610 West Loop will be closed again this weekend

I-69 was shut down at the West Loop for continued construction.

HOUSTON — Heads up weekend commuters, there’s a closure you need to know about.

Beginning Friday at 8 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m., all southbound lanes of I-69 Southwest Freeway at I-610 West Loop will be closed. The closure is part of the I-610 West Loop/ I-69 Southwest Freeway interchange project.

The northbound lanes ended up opening on Sunday afternoon after crews were able to complete the work earlier than anticipated.

Crews will continue construction of the new I-69 southbound connector ramp to I-610 southbound, which is expected to be opened by late October or early November.

Drivers should expect delays this weekend and may want to take another route. Police officers will help with traffic control, TxDOT said. If you have to go that way, here is what Houston Transtar suggests.

TxDOT said the $259 million project “will significantly enhance safety and improve mobility by widening the connector ramps to two lanes, increasing sight distances, and providing remedies to eliminate weaving.”

If you’re heading southbound, take the ramp to 610 northbound and then exit at San Felipe. U-turn there and get back on 610 southbound.  From there, you can get back on the Southwest Freeway southbound.

If you’re heading north, take the 610 West loop southbound to get to Bellaire, where you’ll U-turn and get back on the North Loop main lanes.  From there, you can get back on the northbound lanes.

Houston Transtar has another closure those of you on the east side will want to know about. Starting Friday at 9 p.m. and lasting until further notice, the eastbound ramp from Highway 225 to the 610 East Loop will be shut down. That includes the frontage road connector ramp.
