Drivers share concerns after horrific Grand Parkway crash

There have been at least two recent deadly crashes involving airborne vehicles on Grand Parkway.

HOUSTON — The aftermath of a crash along the Grand Parkway Wednesday night was so bad, it even shocked Harris County Sheriff’s deputies.

The impact crushed the cab of a pick-up truck.

“The driver of the white pick-up truck was deceased on scene,” said HCSO Commander John Shannon.  “EMS personnel anticipate he was killed immediately.”

Investigators believe the crash happened when a woman driving a Lexus hit a barrier.

She went airborne and landed on top of the pickup.

The truck then careened across the median and ended up on a cable barrier across the median.

“I have a safety meeting at work every morning,” said driver Mario Chachere.  “We were talking about it this morning.”  “It was pretty bad.”

It’s at least the second deadly crash along the Grand Parkway in recent months.

A crash near FM 2920 in December killed two people and injured five others.

It also involved an airborne vehicle.

A man on probation for an unrelated crime was later charged with manslaughter.

He blamed a seizure.

But investigators said he was allegedly travelling 95 miles an hour.

“I know people drive 80, 85,” said driver Jose Gonzalez.  “That’s what causes injuries and accidents and everything.”

“I think the traffic’s fast,” said driver Cindy Henshaw.  “I don’t like doing it at all.”  “I mainly stay home because of the traffic.”

Speed limits along the Grand Parkway go up to 75 miles per hour.

We saw signs ranging from 45 to 70 between Sugar Land and Katy.

Seventy is the limit along the stretch where Wednesday night’s deadly crash occurred.

But it’s too soon to know if speed or wet weather played a factor.

“It did not appear intoxication was an issue,” said Shannon.

The man who died was 38 years old.

The driver who lost control is 34 and was taken to a hospital.

Neither has been identified at this point.
