Rangers starter Max Scherzer has two different color eyes, something he's embraced his whole life

Fans may notice something unique about the Rangers' starting pitcher -- he has two different color eyes, something he's embraced his whole life.

ARLINGTON, Texas — During game 3 of the American League Championship Series Tuesday night, the Astros will face a familiar opponent on the mound.

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer gets the start for the Rangers. He was added to the team’s ALCS roster after spending the end of the season and first two rounds of the postseason on the injured list. He'll be opposed by the Astros' Cristian Javier.

You may remember Scherzer pitched for the Nationals when the Astros faced him in the 2019 World Series.  Sherzer actually pitched twice against Houston in that series. He pitched in both game 1 and game 7, both Nationals' wins.

Why does Max Scherzer have two different color eyes?

During the game, fans may have noticed something unique about Sherzer – his eyes are two different colors. His left eye is brown and right eye is blue. We noticed online searches starting to surge for why that was.

Scherzer has a condition called heterochromia iridis. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, it can be present at birth or it can develop shortly after. Someone can also acquire it through an injury later in life. In most cases, people who are born with it experience no other symptoms, but there are instances that it could mean something else is going on. You can learn more about heterochromia here.

Jan Scherzer, Max's mother, told the Kansas City Star that he was born with it.

As for Scherzer, he’s embraced his condition. In a 2019 Associated Press story published before World Series Game 1, he talked about it..

"I've always celebrated it," Scherzer told the AP back then. "Whether you like it or not, that's who I am."

The condition is more common in dogs. Sherzer has embraced that, too. Our sister station in Washington D.C. reported back in 2019 that Scherzer has three dogs that share the same condition: Max, Bo and Rocco Scherzer all have one brown and one blue eye.

During 2019, fans celebrated it, too, dressing up as Scherzer's eyes.
