HOUSTON — Longtime Astros third baseman and now free agent Alex Bregman has won his first-ever Gold Glove Award, Rawlings announced Sunday night.

Bregman becomes the second third baseman in Astros history to win the award, joining Doug Rader, who won five Gold Glove Awards from 1970 to 1974.  The late Ken Caminiti, who played most of his career with the Astros, won three Gold Glove Awards, but they were all while he was with the Padres.

The Rawlings Gold Glove Award was created in 1957 and has become the "highest symbol of defensive excellence" in the MLB.  Winners are determined by combining votes from managers and coaches and incorporating advanced baseball stats.

Bregman led AL third basemen in games (142), fielding percentage (.972), assists (242), total chances (355) and putouts (103).

He also ranked tied for first in outs above average (six), tied for second in defensive runs saved (six) and third in zone rating (.799).

Astros utility player Mauricio Dubón won the Gold Glove Award in 2023. The Astros have won a total of 33 Gold Glove awards in franchise history.

Bregman is now eligible for a Rawlings Platinum Glove Award. Fans can vote here through Nov. 7 at 10:59 p.m. Award winners will be announced Friday, Nov. 8.

Bregman has played his entire career with the Astros. The LSU product spent the last nine seasons with Houston and was with them for their run of seven straight ALCS appearances. He’s been part of four World Series teams and two World Series championships.

He is a career .272 hitter with 191 home runs and 663 RBIs.

Bregman entered free agency, along with future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander, Yusei Kikuchi, Hector Neris, Omar Narvaez, Jason Heyward, Kendall Graveman, Ben Gamel and Caleb Ferguson.
