HOUSTON — Former President Donald Trump has won Texas' 40 electoral votes in the 2024 presidential race, the Associated Press projects.
It means that Trump has won Texas for a third consecutive election.
Texas gained two more electoral votes this cycle after the 2020 census. The Associated Press declared Trump the winner at 8:12 p.m.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott took to X to congratulate the former president on his victory saying, in part, "Texans have spoken! They want strong, conservative leaders who will prioritize economic growth and securing our border."
According to AP, a Republican nominee for president has won Texas for nearly 50 years since Jimmy Carter carried the state in 1976.
In order to win the U.S. presidential election, a candidate must win in enough states to have 270 Electoral College votes.
California has 54 electoral votes. Texas has the second-most with 40 electoral votes. After that, Florida has 30 votes, and New York has 28. Then, it goes to Pennsylvania and Illinois with 19 each.
