Why do so many countries have a shorter election season to pick a leader?

U.S. presidential campaigns are long and costly, other countries limit the length of them.

When President Joe Biden dropped out of his re-election bid, many people wondered if Vice President Kamala Harris had enough time to launch an effective campaign.

She will have just over a hundred days to get the job done, but America’s lengthy and costly campaign season is unusual compared to other democracies.

This time around Former President Trump announced he was running for President again in November of 2022 -- two years ahead of election day. In other countries, there are rules limiting the campaign period.

In the United Kingdom, politicians have just 25 working days, or roughly five weeks, to make their case to voters. The UK also bans political advertising on commercial television and radio.

In some other countries, the length of campaign time is even shorter. For national elections in South Korea, the official campaign period was 22 days in 2022. In Japan, campaigning is only allowed for 12 days in general elections.

So while it remains to be seen if Kamala Harris has enough time to convince voters, other countries have proven it can be done.
