‘Now is our time, we are the change’ | Young voters energized after Biden’s withdrawal from presidential race

KHOU spoke with several young voters who said they weren’t happy with their options for president, but now with change on the horizon, they’re feeling optimistic.

HOUSTON — The presidential race is top of mind for students, like those at the University of Houston. Many KHOU 11 News spoke to Monday held the same message that a lot is at stake and they want their voices heard.

“It is so important, especially as a minority, as a woman, especially as Gen Z. Now is our time, we are the change,” said Alexandra Flores.

Voters KHOU 11 News spoke to said they weren’t happy with their options for the 2024 presidential race before Monday.

“It's very important because it's choosing between the lesser of two evils, in my opinion,” said student Eduardo Gonzales Reyes.

Some said they’re glad to see President Joe Biden leave the race.

“I do feel better, actually. I had wanted an alternative to Biden and any alternative to Biden was good enough for me, honestly,” said student Joe Toussaint.

Others said they’re energized specifically by Vice President Kamala Harris.

“We’ve never had a female president, and it just makes me so happy seeing not only a female, but also a woman of color,” said Andrea Flores.

University of Houston Political Science Professor and KHOU 11 Political Expert Brandon Rottinghaus said these young voters are critical.

“If Texas is going to be competitive generally then they're going to have to have young voters to show up to vote,” said Rottinghaus.

He said these voters have key issues they’ll be watching for.

“Younger generations are more concerned about climate change. They're more concerned about infrastructure issues,” said Rottinghaus.

Rottinghaus said he believes the nation could see a high turnout among younger voters and the people KHOU 11 News spoke with echoed that.

“We are talking about some of the most important issues that are going to define the next generation of rights,” said Rottinghaus.

Another group energized by the news of the last 24 hours is Black Democrats.

The group 'Win with Black Women' organized a virtual call Sunday night. Organized with just a few hours’ notice, they saw 44,000 women call in and donate more than $1.5 million to Harris.
