Great grandmother, infant found dead in house fire near Cleveland area, Liberty County Fire Marshal says

When units arrived, they were able to bring the 84-year-old woman out of the home, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

CLEVELAND, Texas — A great-grandmother and a 9-month-old child were found dead in a mobile home fire in the Tarkington area near Cleveland, Texas Tuesday night, according to the Liberty County Fire Marshal's Office.

Crews with the Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department and the Cleveland Fire Department responded to the scene on County Road 2198 around 8 p.m.

A volunteer firefighter was the first on the scene. Investigators said he was met with heavy smoke and flames but still went into the home to try and rescue those inside. He managed to bring the 84-year-old woman out of the home, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.  When more crews arrived, they discovered the baby's body in the home.

"Located the first victim and was coming out as the other engine crew got here and assisted getting her out of the structer," Tarkington Fire Chief Paul Gregory said. "At that point she was already deceased. They searched for the infant, they found her against the wall in the bedroom. Same thing, the infant was already deceased."

The fire was quickly put out and investigators said it started in the living room. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

The state fire marshal is expected to investigate the fire as well.
