Wellness Wednesday: Jazzercise

When you hear 'Jazzercise,' what do you think of? Maybe legwarmers. How about brightly colored leotards? Well, put them both away because today's Jazzercise looks a whole lot different than you might remember.

When you hear ‘Jazzercise,’ what do you think of? Maybe legwarmers. How about brightly colored leotards? Well, put them both away because today’s Jazzercise looks a whole lot different than you might remember.

“We are so proud of our history,” says Teresa Wagstaff, who’s been teaching for 16 years and started her own franchise 15 years ago.

Next year, the fitness program turns 50. Wagstaff says it has staying power because of how it’s evolved. It doesn’t just offer the standard Dance Mixx anymore. There are more than 10 variations of Jazzercise focused on everything from for strength training to kickboxing, fusion to interval training.

“We’re so much more than what people think,” Wagstaff says.

The music is all Top 40. It and the choreography get updated every 10 weeks. Speaking of choreography, it’s simple enough, even I can get it.

“It might not be perfect the first class – neither was I, even with a dance background,” says Wagstaff.

If you try Jazzercise, she says prepare to get hooked.

“When it’s something you enjoy and you also have friends to keep you accountable, then you’re going to stay with it,” Wagstaff says.

There are more than 20 different Jazzercise studios in the Houston area, but Wagstaff’s is the only one in Katy and she’s moving into a new location. Learn more about it here.
