Leader of North Texas meth conspiracy sentenced

Jesus Velasquez sentenced to 270 months in prison
Jesus Velasquez was sentenced to more than 22 years in prison for his involvement in distributing methamphetamine.

DALLAS -- The leader of a North Texas drug conspiracy was sentenced to 270 months in prison Wednesday in a Dallas federal court.

Jesus Velasquez, who goes by "Chuy," is the last defendant in the case involving the distribution of methamphetamine in large quantities in north Texas. He will also renounce the proceeds of the drug distribution, including a 2008 Jeep Commander and multiple weapons, in addition to the 22-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

Velazquez, 44, was indicted with eight co-defendants in January 2013. He pleaded guilty in June of 2013 to one count of drug conspiracy. Velazquez was the last defendant in the case, receiving the longest sentence.

A series of drug distributions led by Velazquez in North Texas was uncovered by a court-authorized wiretap that recorded discussions Velazquez had with other members of the conspiracy about narcotics transactions, according to information filed as part of the case.

A press release sent to News 8 states that the FBI was in charge of the investigation, with help from several departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney Phelesa Guy was in charge of the prosecution, while Assistant U.S. Attorney John de la Garza handled the forfeiture of Velazquez's proceeds, according to the release from the Department of Justice.
