'Criminal and disgusting' | Gov. Greg Abbott points to arrest of Klein ISD teacher in latest promotion of school voucher plan

The governor’s voucher program would create a savings account for students to cover tuition to private schools.

HOUSTON — Gov. Greg Abbott shared news of the arrest of a Houston-area teacher on child sex trafficking charges Monday night to promote his school vouchers legislation.

The governor shared a post on X from Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez who said his office and the Klein ISD police arrested Kedria Grigsby, 42. Grigsby is a cosmetology teacher at Klein Cain High School who is now charged with three counts of trafficking of a child and three counts of compelling prostitution of juveniles.

The sheriff said the victims, ages 15, 16, and 17 were students and reported runaways.

“What some of our educators are doing is criminal and disgusting," the governor said in his social post. "No child should be compelled by the state to be in a school like this. And yet, current law doesn’t allow the choice to go elsewhere. I’m working to elect state representatives who will change that.”

The governor’s program would create a savings account for students to cover tuition to private schools.

According to the Texas Tribune, during the March Republican primary, Abbott succeeded in knocking off nine fellow Republicans who opposed vouchers in the House during the 2023 legislative sessions. More could be out following the May runoff election.

While the battle over school vouchers has been going on for decades in the Lone Star State, the governor’s insistence on passing his program has reinvigorated the movement.
