Beto O'Rourke hopes for political surprise, holds final rally in El Paso

Beto O'Rourke says Texas is ready to deliver the political world a big surprise.

HOUSTON - Congressman Beto O'Rourke came home to El Paso Monday to mobilize supporters at his final campaign rally ahead of Tuesday's election.

O'Rourke says Texas is ready to deliver the political world a big surprise.

After crisscrossing the state with stops in Houston and Dallas, O'Rourke held a standing-room-only rally at the University of Texas-El Paso Monday night. The auditorium was filled with young voters, the types of voters he will need to turn out on Election Day if he wants to pull off the upset against Sen. Ted Cruz.

O'Rourke says he's not paying attention to the polls. He has no pollster and says this race can't be accurately polled. He told supporters this campaign has made him hopeful and he believes Texas will vote for hope and not fear tomorrow.

"We will need to see the kind of turnout we witnessed in Texas during early voting," O'Rourke said. "El Pasoans have turned out three-and-a-half times what they turned out in the last midterm election. If that trend continues, we win. This one is on all of us. No PACS. No cavalry coming to the rescue. My confidence is in the people of Texas. I think we have every indication based on turnout so far that we're going to have a very good day tomorrow."

Early voting numbers were historic in Harris County as well. O'Rourke is going to need that massive turnout in Houston, too.

It will not be easy, though. Texas hasn't elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 30 years.

Tuesday morning, O'Rourke and his wife, Amy, will cast their ballots in their neighborhood before more last-minute campaigning up until the polls close in El Paso.
