New dates for storm debris pickup announced by City of Houston

Solid Waste Management crews will begin the second and final pass of debris collection on July 8. They've already collected enough to fill half of NRG Stadium.

HOUSTON — If you still have storm debris stacked up on your curbside, you're not alone.

The City of Houston says crews have been working seven days a week to pick up the debris left from the May 16 derecho storm but they're not done yet.

A second and final pass of debris collection is scheduled to begin on July 8 and will last about 30 days, the Solid Waste Management Department announced Thursday.

What residents should do

  • Report all storm debris to the 3-1-1 Call Center or houstontx.gov/311
  • SWMD urges residents to separate storm debris from bulk waste.
  • Ensure that tree trunks are 2-3 feet or less in diameter and 3 feet or less in length
  • Tree branches should be 6 feet or less in length.
  • Debris piles must be within 10 feet onto private property lines as crews cannot encroach beyond that limit.

The first pass of debris collection will end on June 30. Then crews will take some time off before preparing for and starting the second pass.

When the second pass is finished, the remainder of the storm debris operation will consist of reduction and restoration.

Crews have already collected an estimated 1.55 million cubic yards since the derecho storm, enough to fill half of NRG Stadium. According to SWMD, they've picked up an average of more than 1,000 truckloads a day.
