Sterling High School student shot while playing basketball on campus

Initial reports said the student was grazed by the bullet by now police say the student was shot in the arm.

HOUSTON — A Sterling High School student was shot in the arm Wednesday afternoon while playing basketball on campus.

Houston Police said the shooting occurred at a nearby apartment complex on Selinsky Road. Investigators believe there were at least two guns and two shooters involved. 

A witness said the 15-year-old was hit as he was bending down to pick up a basketball.

The student was taken to the hospital. The bullet is being processed as evidence.

A second person, not at the campus, was also taken to the hospital. He is believed to have knocked himself out while running from the gunshots, police said.

Ten pistol casings were found at the scene, according to police.

HISD released a statement on the incident:

"After school, one of our students was struck by a bullet which injured his arm while he played outside at Sterling High School. Police are investigating off-campus criminal activity which may be connected to the student’s injury. We are cooperating fully with the police investigation."
