HPD: Bystanders wrestle gun away from suspect after shooting in southwest Houston

According to police, it started when the suspect backed into a car the victim was in. That led to a confrontation that escalated to gunfire.

HOUSTON — A man is in critical condition after he was shot by someone who backed into the car he was in, according to Houston police.

It happened on Windswept near the Southwest Freeway in southwest Houston a little after before 12:30 a.m. Saturday. According to police, two people were in a car in a parking lot when the suspect, who was in a truck, backed into the car they were in.

The two people got out and confronted the driver of the truck.  Words were exchanged and the confrontation escalated into gunfire. A man who had been in the car was shot four times in the back, according to Lt. Wilkins with the Houston Police Department.

Wilkins said other people in the area managed to wrestle the gun away from the suspect, who then took off running.

Police said they have a good idea who the suspect is. As of this posting, there has not been an arrest.

This is a developing story.  We’ll post more information as we get it.
