HOUSTON — A 15-year-old has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of a teen near a Cy-Fair ISD high school in December, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
The shooting happened on Dec. 19 along Brenwood, which is near Cypress Lakes High School. Jake Mason, a 17-year-old former student, was shot and killed during an altercation with a group of people while waiting to pick up his girlfriend.
More than a month went by before an arrest was made. The 15-year-old suspect was charged with murder, and as of Monday, he was in custody at the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center, the sheriff said in a post on X.
Prosecutors said the teen suspect called his mother, Brittany Reese, and told her that he shot someone and asked her to pick him up. Prosecutors said she did and also helped him get rid of the gun by throwing it into a bayou. She was also arrested.
According to court records, the gun was found by the HCSO Dive Team.
Reese is charged with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. She was released on a $5,000 bond.
