Sheriff: 4 people taken to hospital in possible alcohol related crash in NW Harris Co.

Sheriff Gonzalez said the person that caused the accident was said to be traveling at a high rate of speed and may have been intoxicated.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Alcohol may be a factor in a major car crash involving 5 people, said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The scene is near 290 and FM 1960.

A Mercedes SUV was speeding down a hill and hit a Ford SUV, according to Senior Deputy Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. That crash caused a chain reaction.

Witnesses told deputies the driver never used their brakes.

After the crash, the suspect ran away from the scene but was later found in the parking lot of a Texas Roadhouse. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

Deputies believe he was under the influence, but it is unclear if he consumed alcohol or drugs.

"The fact that its 11am, and alcohol could be a factor is a sad reality. Seems to be the norm these days," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted.

Four people were taken to the hospital. A woman, in her early 20s, was in grave condition. The driver of the Ford was also taken to the hospital. He is stable.

Surveillance video from nearby restaurants may have captured the crash.

Deputies said the area will be closed for another hour or two.
