HPD: Man in stolen car leads police on chase, knocks out power in neighborhood after crashing into utility pole

Houston police say a 23-year-old man led officers on a chase in a black pickup truck, which was reportedly stolen.

HOUSTON — CenterPoint Energy crews worked Saturday night to restore power to a southwest Houston neighborhood after a man being chased by police crashed and took down a power pole.

It happened just after noon on Saturday near Renwick Drive and Gulfton Street.

Houston police say a 23-year-old man led officers on a chase in a black pickup truck, which was reportedly stolen. The chase ended on Renwick Drive, taking out a power pole in the process.

"Police came out with guns, telling him not to move and I didn’t know if he had a gun on him or what happened, it spooked me," said Abdul Khafid, a resident in the neighborhood.

Khafid was backing out of his driveway moments before hearing the crash and thud on his own car.

"That actually hit my car, the wire actually hit the car and then rolled off," he said.

The suspect had to be carted off in handcuffs. Police told KHOU 11 News he will face a charge of evading arrest.

Meanwhile, Khafid is just grateful his car was spared, knowing things could've been much worse.

"Always be on point and try to be aware as to your surroundings and what’s going on, it's some crazy people out here man," he said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital but is expected to survive. Police have not released his name yet.

CenterPoint's outage map currently gives an estimated restoration time at just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The outage map can be viewed here.
