HTown60: The listening vessels at Discovery Green

Michelle Choi shows us two sculptures in Discovery Green with a hidden purpose.

HOUSTON — Say you’re trying to talk to your friend, but they’re 70 feet away. How would you do it?

Call them? Yell at them? Two cups and a string? Or how about a big stone?

Yeah, here at Discovery Green, you can talk using two limestone sculptures. They’re called “listening vessels.”

How does it work?

You sit in one while someone else sits in the other. You talk and you can hear each other – from yep – a distance of 70 feet.

So, what’s the science behind this? The stone’s concave shape helps focus sound waves.

Okay, so they’re not portable, but I’ve got tell you, it’s a nice way to sit back, take in the view of downtown Houston and have a chat.

If you’d like to go check out the listening vessels, they’re located in the Wortham Foundations Gardens in Discovery Green near the Hilton and George R. Brown Convention Center.
