HOUSTON — Many KHOU 11 viewers are wondering why the Houston area flooded again Tuesday night.
While there’s no simple answer, one factor is rain fell so hard in a short amount of time Tuesday, it rivaled Hurricane Harvey.
The Harris County Flood Control District has compiled statistics showing one-hour rainfall totals for past flood events.
- Max. One-Hour Rainfall:
- Tropical Storm Allison (2001): 5.7 inches
- Tax Day Flood (2016): 4.7 inches
- Hurricane Harvey (2017): 6.8 inches
- May 7, 2019: 6.73 inches recorded in 50 minutes in Sugar Land
One-hour rainfall totals give a good snapshot of weather events.
HCFCD said street flooding starts when the Houston area gets more than two inches of rain in an hour. Homes start flooding in certain areas when over four inches of rainfall in an hour.
