HOUSTON — Houston Mayor John Whitmire gave his first State of the City address on Tuesday.
The event was hosted by KHOU 11 News anchor Mia Gradney and was held at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel downtown.
Whitmire talked about his eight months in office as well as the city's response to the May derecho and Hurricane Beryl in early July.

Whitmire touted the collective bargaining agreement with the Houston Professional Firefighters Association as one of his best accomplishments.
"We were fair to Houstonians, taxpayers and fair to the firefighters. You can't have a great city if you don't have sufficient police, fire and EMS and all the things that go into quality of life," he said. "If we work together, I'm prepared to give you eight years of some of the best years left in my life."
The mayor said he wants to continue addressing quality-of-life issues -- including homelessness.
He also said he wants to continue collaborating with state and county leaders while he's in office.
