After 2-year restoration project, River Oaks Theatre set to reopen to public

The theater, which originally opened in 1939, added modern improvements like comfortable seating and a high-quality projector.

HOUSTON — After a two-year, multi-million dollar restoration project, Houston's beloved River Oaks Theatre will reopen once again.

The historic theater, now owned by Culinary Khancepts, will hold a grand reopening on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The theater originally opened in 1939 and the recent restoration focused on preserving its original architecture and charm while adding modern improvements like comfortable seating and a high-quality projector.

"This was done the right way, with integrity and artistic vision with a homage to what has been and also how we move forward to make this theater what it can be for all of Houston for years and generations to come," Houston District C City Councilmember Abbie Kamin said.

To mark Thursday's grand reopening, the theater will host an advance screening of the Joker sequel, "Joker: Folie à Deux."

The theater will also now host live events, such as concerts and comedy shows.
