Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner presides over last city council meeting

For the last time, Turner and his six council members sat around the horseshoe, reflecting on their accomplishments and challenges over the past eight years.

HOUSTON — Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner presided over his last city council meeting Wednesday -- in style.

It was a memorable impression as Turner walked into City Hall wearing a burgundy suit with glitter and a black fedora cap.

For the last time, he and six outgoing council members sat around the horseshoe reflecting on their accomplishments and challenges over the past eight years in office.

"I'm very proud of what we have done collectively," Turner said. "No other mayor in the City of Houston has dealt with seven federally-declared disasters, pensions, consent decree, social civil unrest, all at the same time."

There was a lot of praise and congratulations for Turner’s tenure during the city council meeting but also some controversy. Members got into a heated debate regarding contract amendments for airport concessions, but once a vote was passed about the issue, council members went back to singing Turner's praises.

"We have been incredibly blessed to have you as a leader," council member Tarsha Jackson said.

In an emotional video tribute, Turner wished success to the next administration before gaveling out for the last time.

Mayor-elect John Whitmire will be inaugurated on Jan. 2.
