Houston man attacked by crocodile in Cancun

A crocodile attack in Mexico left a Houston man fighting for his life.

A crocodile attack in Mexico left a Houston man fighting for his life.

Jonathan "YoBoy" Schoenemen is currently in a Cancun hospital, but family and friends are trying to get him back home. The problem is he needs a special medical transport.

Jonathan, who went to Katy Taylor High School and HBU, is a fisherman who has been living and working near Cancun. He was spear fishing in a mangrove swamp last week, when he was viciously attacked by a crocodile.

Luckily his lifelong friend, Travis Simmons, was able to drag him out of the water into the boat and get him to help. Simmons spent five years in the Navy and his training may have saved Jonathan's life.

"I had a lot of training for trauma, first aid for trauma for wartime scenarios, a lot of swimming rescue," Simmons said.

Jonathan underwent an 8-hour surgery. Most of his injuries were to his head and neck, so he was put in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator.

The good news is that as of Tuesday Jonathon was taken off the ventilator and is now breathing on his own.

But he still has a long road to recovery.

If you'd like to help, his family has set up a fundraising webpage:
